Metal Casting Technologies : September 2008
Supercharge Your Green Sand System NEW ZEALAND Green sand systems work harder and last longer with TRUBOND® . These sodium bentonite grades mull in quickly and undergo a controlled hydration to develop a stronger, more elastic adhesive. TRUBOND delivers excellent green compressive and hot strength properties and maintains its working bond in repetitive exposure to high heat loads and metal temperatures. New Zealand innovation and high value despite obstacles By Steve Wellburn New Zealand central government set a path a number of years ago to eliminate domestically imposed tariffs. In addition over recent years New Zealand has maintained an interest rate among the highest of the developed economies with the consequence of an over inflated currency cross rate against those of its major trading partners. New Zealand metal casters’ markets have steadily dwindled as the remnants of the country’s small automotive sector slowly diminished to insignificance and as much of the domestically produced commodity style cast product has progressively been replaced by more competitively priced equivalents imported from the developing countries. New Zealand manufacturers are relocating to countries that provide subsidies or more favorable manufacturing climates with significantly lower labour or compliance costs or both. As these manufacturers relocate outside New Zealand their inherent demand for castings manufactured in New Zealand is reduced accordingly. However in the face of this a handful of New Zealand foundries have risen to the challenge and maintained a good level of success even though they remain individually and collectively small on a world scale. R ecent years have been particularly challenging for many New Zealand foundries due to compounding adverse environmental conditions.
