10 www.metals.rala.com.au Casting quality solutions at Magma use group meeting in Bangkok M5 Engineering (Thailand) and MAGMA Asia Pacific held their annual MAGMA Thailand User Group Meeting (UGM) in March 2018 at the Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel in Bangkok. The one-day event under the banner “Casting Quality Solutions – Virtual Optimization of Casting Processes” was attended by around 80 delegates and was opened with a welcoming speech from Mr. Jan Wuethrich, the Technical Director of M5 Engineering. This was followed by Mr. Jan Eilers of MAGMA Asia Pacific and colleagues from Singapore, who gave news and updates about the latest developments in MAGMASOFT capabilities. This year the special guest speakers were: z Associate Prof. Dr. Chaowalit Limmaneevichitr from the Production Engineering Dept. at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT). Dr Chaowalit, who is Vice President for Student Development at KMUTT considered the “Role of Metal Processing Industry for Thailand 4.0” z Assistant Prof. Dr. Kageeporn Wongpreedee, Assistant to the President for Quality Development at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok, who discussed how design and quality of items such as jewelry can be improved in a presentation on “Enhanced craftsmanship market by simulation technology” Other highlights of the seminar were the success stories presented by MAGMASOFT users on how to optimize casting processes and the role of simulation and modeling as integral parts towards Industry 4.0. For example, Mr. Jukkrid Makming from Thai Chanathorn Industry Company, a producer of die-cast automotive and motor-cycle parts located in Samutprakarn, showed how simulation could be used to predict and hence prevent die soldering problems. Mr. Gunter Busch from the SE Asia office of ALD Vacuum Technologies also explained how correct melting practice using vacuum induction & degassing (VID) technology combined with casting simulation could enable cost efficient production of Duplex Stainless-Steel castings such as large 2205 pump housings. In addition, students and staff from KMUTT – Magma Academy reported on some of their recent projects in using simulation to improve casting processes. A second group of students is now BRIEFINGS Group of delegates at M5 Engineering – Magma UGM seminar.
