44 METAL Casting Technologies June 2006 Complete protection for foundry robots ABB Robotics is ensuring the extended life of robots within harsh and hostile environments, by offering complete protection with its 'FoundryPlus' foundry protection systems. Six-axis industrial robots ramp up the efficiency of the foundry processes such as die-casting, precision casting and sand casting. Robots, however, are sensitive to the harsh environments in which they operate. Incessant showers of sparks, harsh lubricants and metal 'spits' expose the equipment to excessive wear, which will eventual result in increased operational downtime, repairs, and reduced service life. Most robot suppliers provide partial protection (mainly the wrist), leaving out parts of the manipulator. Unfortunately, few manufacturers offer protection of the upper and lower arm system and the base. Tiny airborne particles of coolant and lubricant are not concerned with which parts of the robot are protected, and which are not. These substances penetrate all unprotected areas, causing damage and corrosion. Protection of the entire robot is therefore crucial. Only ABB's FoundryPlus offers complete protection of the robot, as well FoundryPlus protection of additional axes, such as track motions. Robots protected by FoundryPlus are completely sealed -- from base to wrist. It offers protection that meets and exceeds IP67 according to IEC 529, which in practice means that the robot is totally sealed against the ingress of any solid or fluid substances. IP67 compliance in itself is not sufficient to ensure long term operational up-time. It must also considerable resilience against wear and corrosion. ExactfloTM cellular ceramic filters offer a variety of sizes and cell configurations designed to meet or exceed demanding performance standards. They provide consistent inclusion removal and flow control and can withstand pouring temperatures up to 2,650 degrees Fahrenheit. The filters, made from alumina/silica ceramic, are targeted for use with gray and ductile iron but are also effective with aluminum and other non-ferrous alloys. The filters are available in a range of sizes from 37 to 81 mm square and with square or delta (triangular) cells ranging in size from 100 cells per square inch (CSI) to 300 CSI.
