WHO'S WHO OF METALS -- ANNUAL 2006/7 21 Employment and training While improved earnings positions of 2006 translate into steady employment throughout the industry, individual sectors reveal differential effects. The automotive and automotive components sectors indicate no particular difficulty in general in filling positions; however, positions in electronics and automation have shown some shortfall. In keeping with industries everywhere exhibiting buoyant conditions, high skilled positions reveal a high turnover, with a reported sector-wide annual turnover of 15% eg. maintenance engineers and quality systems engineers; these same sectors also report no shortage of graduates. And, both conditions are expected to continue into 2007. However, this is more a consequence of proximity to the major coastal city centres, as foundries located further inland tend to reveal much lower turnover. Other metal casting sectors, such as telecommunications, are now evincing rapid skill set development, with some indicating that the level is fast approaching that of their western counterparts. However, for 2006, the metal casting foundry industry per se reveals a mixed employment and training picture. There are indications that continued growth at these rates has resulted in a general shortfall in supply of middle-level ('grey collar') positions, as well as some managerial positions, such a foundry manager.
