MINI FEATURE VDC casting Two new technologies for producing more efficient production of billet are ready for site trials. AirCAST is a direct chill casting hot top mould used to cast aluminium and magnesium extrusion billet. It features a short mould that produces a high quality cast surface with low solute segregation and it has an improved oil and gas distribution system over existing mould designs. The new mould can be teamed with a new mould table design to minimise fill time and temperature variation between moulds. This feature reduces scrap and improves productivity. Both technologies are available through o.d.t. Engineering Pty Ltd. Multi-stage filtration system MQP limited continue to develop a new prototype multi stage filter. The first industrial prototype has been successfully demonstrated and the prototype continues to be refined based on the results of water modelling. The first chamber of the filter consists of a ceramic foam filter operating in cake mode; grain refiner is added in a second chamber and a cyclone deployed in a final chamber to ensure removal of any oxides or agglomerates arising from the grain refiner addition or release events from the foam filter. Fusion clad rolls While fusion casting has been commercially available for over 3 years from Novelis Corporation, the development of fusion clad rolls is a technology to look out for in the future. This patented "Novelis fusion" technology, uses a twin chamber DC casting mould so that two alloys, one of which is the cladding alloy, are simultaneously cast.
