At its Thai Technical Centre which was established in 2004 a new environmental laboratory has been opened to perform wastewater analysis and hazardous substance analysis. Eight specialist speakers were invited from Japan, Germany and Thailand to explain the theory and practice of "green" surface treatments. In opening the event Mr. Kentaro Sato, President of Thai Parkerizing, said that this was the first of a planned series of seminars to encourage and promote research and development in Thailand in the fields of heat treatment, surface technology and metal finishing. The three keynote speakers addressed this theme covering "Technology & Innovation in Thailand", "Nano Technology & Materials Research in Japan" and "Steels, Perpetually Developed". Later on, specific topics included corrosion protection treatment that is Chromium VI free, improved nitriding technology, environmentally friendly plating and progress in sustainable surface treatments. In all the presentations the keyword was "environment" with the message that correct surface treatment is "green" since it reduces material loss by corrosion and wear during service prolonging the life of components and reducing waste due to replacement. The seminar was arranged to follow on from the 3rd Thailand Metallurgy Conference which was held at the same venue on the 26-27th October. This event, well attended by 175 delegates, was organized by the Dept. of Materials Engineering Kasetsart University, MTEC and the Iron & Steel Institute of Thailand to focus on "Metallurgical Research for Thailand Development". Some 60 technical papers and 23 posters were presented with around one third of the papers dealing with topics related to metal casting. These included properties of Al die-castings, semi-solid processing, compacted graphite irons, alloy white irons, inoculation, stainless steels and microstructural modeling, etc. Two keynote presentations were given. The first by Dr Somrek of King Mongut's University of Technology North Bangkok considered the important role of metallurgical development in boosting the "Thai-Khem- Khaeng" (Strong Thailand) scheme (2010-2012) which is an economic stimulus package from
