PRODUCTS METAL Casting Technologies March 2007 53 Belec Vario Lab The Belec Vario Lab is a very versatile spectrometer with economical operation, excellent precision and accuracy. Detection limits are very good, e.g. in Fe base, Carbon 0.0005 to 4.5%, Ti-1 is 0.0001 to 2%, Mn is 0.0002 to 18% (factory guaranteed ranges). The open spark stand has built-in safety monitoring, automatic sample clamping, Belec-exclusive argon flow and pressure stand monitoring. The Vario Lab is available either as a "stand-alone" configuration (160Kg) or benchtop model (100Kg) for a laboratory or on the shop floor. The dual stands option allows fast turn around between ferrous and non-ferrous base samples. A probe can be added to enable large billets, blocks and castings to be analysed without the need to cut a piece for sampling purposes. A full range of adapters for tubes, wires, ball bearings and small pieces is available for cross- sectional analyses down to <0.5mm. The low argon and power usage, (~0.2 L/min & 100W in standby, ~2 L/min & 600W in operation), a small footprint and a sealed spectrometer means economy of costs and space. First element of the pioneering development is the unique Foundry Prime finishing: The Foundry Prime protection consists of several components generated especially for a long-life cycle of the robot even in extreme environments. The robot itself is made up of anticorrosive parts and works with pressurized motors, purpose-built against permeation of humidity. The electronics are protected against wetness. To secure the robot from the outside it is protected with a 3 layer epoxy-painting extra for the aggressive surrounding of a cleaning cell. The Foundry Prime protected robot withstands 100 % humidity and water vapour of a typical water jet cleaning application. In the very specific application of water-jet cleaning with high humidity the robot can operate at moderate speed with a cleaning- bath temperature up to 60 degrees Celsius. Foundry Prime also enables different parts to be cleaned by only one cell-integrated robot. Due to the fact that a special protection cover is not necessary, the robot with Foundry Prime protection is as flexible as a standard robot. This flexibility simplifies programming and enables the construction of significant smaller production cells where many different parts can be cleaned by only one robot in the same cell. High-pressure treatments now can be carried out in different applications. The water jet cleaning application can be used for removing cooling and cutting oils after machine tool operation as well as for chip and flash removal after machining.
