METAL Casting Technologies September 2010 3 been developed. The lids are based on a highly insulating rigid refractory supported in a minimal steel frame. These lids are a very practical and easily applied method of reducing the heat loss from the upper surface of molten metal in a ladle. The performance and benefit of ladle lids has been evaluated as follows: - The rate of temperature drop of the liquid steel in an uncovered ladle and one covered with a ladle lid was compared. The graph comparing the cooling profile of the molten steel in the covered and uncovered ladles. The metal in the uncovered ladle lost an average of 12.5OC/minute over the duration of the test.
