Metal Casting Technologies : September 2005
part of the Yizheng Automotive Industrial Park which is currently under construction. The industrial zone is developed under Yizheng City's "National Land Reserve Center" which was approved and authorised in 2003 to reserve approximately 410 ha for industrial development. Asimco's land is less than 1.5% of this area. Conversion of land for industrial development started in 2003. Asimco took the decision to seek to build a greenfield factory in mid 2004, which is after the land conversion process started. Asimco acquired land in 2004 and aims to acquire the balance of the 60,000 m2 in 2005. The Langfang facility will be established on a 7,500 m2 site in the Langsen Automotive Industrial Area of the Langfang Development Zone in an existing building. Land for this building was converted for industrial development some eight years ago. Asimco will lease an existing building which was formerly used for manufacturing and warehousing. Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Management Asimco appointed a Director of Environment, Health and Safety reporting to the Vice President of Manufacturing in late 2004, and recruitment of additional skilled EHS management staff is planned. Each operating company now has an EHS coordinator who reports to the EHS Director on a monthly basis according to a reporting template defined by the EHS Director. Since his appointment the EHS Director has started work to develop Asimco's corporate environmental policy, has defined basic EHS rules within Asimco , instituted regular EHS reporting from and within the operating companies, and has developed standard accident investigation procedures. Four of Asimco's 13 Chinese operating companies have ISO 14001 certification and certification is planned at a further four companies by the end of 2005. Asimco undertook a program of environmental and occupational health and safety audits in 2002 for its then current Chinese operations. Since that time however, companies have been bought and sold, and some recommendations of the old audit program implemented: the audits will be repeated and new time-bound action plans developed as necessary to bring all sites to compliance with IFC and local requirements. There will also be regular external follow-up of the action plan to ensure its implementation. One of Asimco's operating companies has suffered two fatal accidents within the last year. These events have made it clear throughout the company that greater emphasis on a safe workplace and safe working practices is required and safety matters are currently the priority of the EHS Director. In addition to the initiatives described above, safety glasses have been introduced throughout the company, respirators are used where the workplace is dusty and use of ear defenders, safety shoes and hard hats where necessary will be enforced this year. Other universal initiatives are the implementation of the Dupont STOP safety awareness program within Asimco, Supercharge Your Green Sand System Green sand systems work harder and last longer with TRUBOND®. These sodium bentonite grades mull in quickly and undergo a controlled hydration to develop a stronger, more elastic adhesive. TRUBOND delivers excellent green compressive and hot strength properties and maintains its working bond in repetitive exposure to high heat loads and metal temperatures.
