www.metals.rala.com.au TECHNICAL FEATURE CONCLUDING REMARKS A recent study based on cars produced in Europe  has shown that the amount of Aluminium in new cars had increased to 132kg in 2005 from 50kg in 1990. By 2010 a further increase to 157kg per new car is predicted. In European cars Al is being used increasingly for body structures, closures and chassis application. If Thailand is producing 2million vehicles a year by 2010 the annual automotive demand for Al Alloys could be around 300,000 tonnes. The automotive usage on Mg Alloys is also expected to increase but at present, although foundries have shown interest in technical seminars on Mg topics, there is no Mg castings production in Thailand so parts will have to be imported. The only work on Ti Alloys is in relation to corrosion and wear performance for medical implant uses. At present nearly all Thai based research work on light alloys, and on cast metals in general, is being carried out in universities or institutions so it is difficult to assess its short term value and impact in industry. However in the longer term this "academic" research is steadily building up expertise and capability in Thailand, notably in microstructural characterization. One hopes that these skills will eventually be better appreciated by the Thai metals industry and persuade companies to get involved in some research. ● References. 1. J.T.H. Pearce.
