Metal Casting Technologies : September 2007
www.metals.rala.com.au 14 BRIEFINGS the past year. Utilising the fast growing technique of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), the K-Alpha enables rapid, accurate and cost- effective quantitative monitoring of the surface chemical composition, providing chemical characterization of the top few nanometers of inorganic, organic, biological, metallurgical, semi-conducting and magnetic solids. Designed for high-throughput sample analysis, the revolutionary system incorporates data processing algorithms offering full automation for data acquisition through to interpretation and reporting. The R&D 100 Awards were established in 1963 to identify the 100 most technologically significant new products in the market place in a given year. PacRim acquires Australian foundry services A long time stalwart in the Australian foundry industry has retired. Nev Murray, active in the industry seemingly forever has called it a career. Most of his business concerns in Australian Foundry Services (AFS) were taken over by Pacific Rim Casting and Patternmaking Supplies. Ken Foulke, of PacRim has stated that he is pleased to take over Nev's interests, and will be challenged to meet and exceed the standard of service that Nev provided to the industry. While Nev has retired, don't expect him to fade away entirely. He will probably still be around for many more years." Omega Foundry Machinery awarded Omega Foundry Machinery Ltd in the UK recently won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in recognition of the excellent export achievement accomplished by the company in recent years. The company manufactures specialist machinery for the foundry industry. The range of machinery supplied allows for one off individual items to full 'turnkey' projects of which the company has several underway at the moment including a new foundry being built in Sweden for the automotive industry. Vale Mr. Doug Timms died on August 4 after a recent illness. Doug was the inaugural President of the Australian Foundry Institute and served the Institute for many years. He was a progressive thinking man who was always willing to listen to other peoples ideas (not necessarily always to his benefit). He suffered setbacks in his business, but bounced back to continue working in the foundry industry right up until his retirement. Darcy Hamilton, the current President of the AFI commenced his career in the foundry industry with Doug, and recalls, "I always found him to be one of life's gentlemen and he would always say when a customer would ask for a casting that was out of our field, "Don't send them away without telling them who can help them. They will always remember that, and one day may need something that you can do." This advice has proven invaluable throughout my career. Doug will be sadly missed by his family and all who new him. Managing Director, Mark Fenyes in front of the Omega staff receiving the Queen's Award for Enterprise from the Cambridgeshire Lord Lieutenant. Doug Timms Subscription Winner Congratulations to Guy Brand of Zedlina Foundry Pty Ltd who is the winner of our Special Renewal Offer for September renewals. Guy will receive a complimentary one year subscription to MCT magazine.
