Metal Casting Technologies : September 2007
Magnesium Injection Moulding (Thixomoulding (c)) Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world which has this facility. Magnesium injection moulding, which is a revolutionary semi-solid process for high speed injection moulding of net- shape magnesium alloy parts, is regarded as the most advanced way of fabricating high quality, high strength, high complexity and high weight magnesium alloy parts and components to precision tolerances. These parts and components are usually for aesthetic, structural and functional uses for electronics, telecommunications and automotive industries. The government has set up a Mould and Die Design Centre to provide an additional boost to the development of the local mould and die industry. The Centre will provide R&D, design, consultancy, training and facilities rental services to the local industry and the manufacturing sector in general. New Zealand operates an open economy that presents significant challenges posed by the unprotected importation of commodity castings at prices little more than the local cost of the raw materials. Adverse affects of a lack of economies of scale in a country of just over 4 million coupled with a significant distance to export markets also contribute to the difficult conditions. This affects foundries of all sizes in this country. There are no official statistics on the size of the New Zealand metal casting industry but estimates put it at around 20,000 tonnes from perhaps 100 operations mostly employing 1-10 involved directly in metal casting operations. There are only a handful employing between 20 and 50 employees.
