The energy consumption per ton iron castings is around 459 tons standard coal, two times or more than that of developed countries. "The waste gas of CO2, CO and SO2 charged per year reaches 16.5 billion cubic metres, dust 0.9 million tons, 1.8-2.2 million tons of waste sand and 5.3 million tons of dregs." He said the China Foundry Association should produce some statistics on energy consumption and pollution, and should also propose an energy saving objective in conjunction with China's 11th Five Year Plan. "I think it is definitely possible to cut off 20 per cent," said Guo Shuyan. But as the UN project showed, the sector responsible for more than half of China's cast metals, the TVEs, have limited access to technology and generally learn from other successful firms and copy them. Unfortunately there's a lack of energy conservation technology success stories in TVE foundries - therefore many of them are simply waiting for others to act.
