All rights reserved. ©2003 based programmes leading to M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. across a number of broad areas of research, e.g. Biofuels, Fuels Combustion & Emission Control, Energy and Environmental Management/Policy, etc. In the Centre of Excellence in Metal Casting Technology (CEMCT) at KMUTT there are a number of on-going research projects on environmental topics, for example, the use of dross for fertilizer and exothermic sleeves. A new foundry workshop due to be built at CEMCT will be developed as an exhibition foundry for good environmental practice. Clearly if foundries reduce defects, rework and scrap levels they will be doing themselves and the environment a favour. So, to help Thai foundries improve their methods engineering training and to develop its research, CEMCT has expanded work on casting simulation by obtaining an academic licence for ConiferCast software with support from VTT Industrial Systems, Finland. In October about 60 delegates from industry took part in a 2 day seminar on Casting Defects Arising from Moulding Sand Properties at CEMCT. The seminar was supported by Dantherm Filtration Thailand and SERT Metal, France. The Faculty of Engineering at KMUTT is working with the Dept. of Environmental Science at Silpakorn University and the Environmental Engineering Association of Thailand to organize the 7th National Conference on the Environment during 12-14th March 2008. During the past year Kasetsart University, Bangkok has also expanded the work of its special Clean Technology and EcoDesign Research Unit in training and updating industry in cleaner production and life cycle assessment. EASTERN SEABOARD POLLUTION PROBLEMS HIGHLIGHT NEED FOR ACTION Although Thai universities, MTEC and other institutions are setting good environmental examples via technology improvements and training provision there are many existing problems to be tackled across all types of Thai industry, in particular the need for improvements in emission standards and for SME companies to be included in some sort of EIA exercise.
