PRODUCTS Spoon automation For foundry automation when using robots, Precimeter is now introducing the spoon automation system. As an alternative to electrode scanning, Precimeter offers a purpose-built proximity probe to allow positioning of the exact operating point of the spoon. The advantages are: • no contact with the melt • no oxide adherence • no corrosion • accurate approach of the point of reference This contact free measuring probe is made for smaller measuring ranges. The measuring range depends on the diameter of the probe. For the standard probe with a probe diameter of 115 mm, a measuring range of 100 mm is achieved. A major advantage is remote operation in relation to the melt. The probe should not come into direct contact with liquid metal. For extreme applications in which heavy splashing cannot be ruled out, the probe should be protected with a monolith protection hood. The probes can withstand up to 800°C and can also be used in closed systems without forced air cooling. They must not however come into contact with an open fire, e.g. burners, since the operating temperature of the probe can easily be exceeded as a result. T: +46 31 7645520 E: email@example.com W: www.precimeter.com/dc METAL Casting Technologies December 2007 67 Smallest Holmatro foundry wedge: HFW 926 At the 2007 edition of GIFA Dutch manufacturer of high-pressure hydraulic foundry wedges Holmatro presented its smallest wedge model so far, the HFW 926. With an insertion size of only 10 mm and very compact overall dimensions this model is highly suitable to separate risers and feeders from small (and mainly serially produced) castings. According to their individual preferences, users can choose between a pistol-style control grip and one on top of the tool. In addition to two-handed operation (which is always safer) both control types also allow single-handed operation. Holmatro's foundry wedge series consists of various models with different spreading capacities, insertion sizes and blade lengths to suit a wide variety of product separation applications in foundries. Attached to a balancer the wedges enable weightless operation. Compared to hammering this significantly reduces the physical burden on the operator. The most striking feature shared by all Holmatro foundry wedge models is a unique rotation system for easy positioning under any angle. As a result of this it is no longer necessary to reposition castings in order to remove another riser or feeder.
