BRIEFINGS MTEC MIM ENGINEER RECEIVES “FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE 2008” RESEARCH AWARD Dr. Anchalee Manonukul, a research engineer at the National Metals & Materials Technology Centre (MTEC) in Thailand, is one of four lady scientists to receive 2008 research fund awards from the L’Oreal Thailand Co. Ltd. The award to Dr. Anchalee is for her work in developing powder forming processes and products to increase Thailand’s manufacturing capability with special attention given to Metal Injection Moulding (MIM). Dr. Anchalee is leader of the MTEC group that has set up the first, and still the only, demonstration MIM pilot plant in Thailand, and is currently engaged in research into Titanium Alloy MIM products. She is co- author of an article on MIM published in MCT (2007) Vol. 53 No. 3 September pages 54-60. The L’Oreal Thailand “For Women in Science” Research Fund has donated four awards, each of 200,000 Baht for 2008, two in Materials Science and two in Life Science. This is the sixth year that awards have been made. The objectives include encouraging women to take more interest in science and technology, and to publicize the ability of women in R & D to improve the quality of life. TFS HOLD FOUNDRY TECHNOLOGY SEMINAR AT INTERMACH SHOW The Thai Intermach Exhibition celebrated its 25th birthday with the recent May 2008 show, opened by Mr. Phasukavanich, Permanent Secretary of the Thai Ministry of Industry, at the Bangkok the International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC). Intermach is co-organized by CMP Media (Thailand) with support from industrial organizations, such as Thai Subcontracting Promotion Association, Thai Foundrymen’s Society, Thai Tool & Die Industry Association and Thai Logistics & Production Society. One of the events during Intermach was a two day Thai Foundrymen’s Society (TFS) seminar for industry under the Thai Met 2008 banner. Topics covered included: ¦ Selection of melting furnaces for cast irons ¦ Refractories for cast steel and cast iron production ¦ Refractories for Al and Cu base alloys production ¦ Quality of liquid aluminum ¦ Environmental impact assessment for foundries ¦ Cost reduction through electricity usage management ¦ Testing and inspection ¦ CAE for design & production of castings.
